Drežniška goat

Drežniška goat

The only native Slovenian goat breed

The breed got its name after the Drežnica village.

Based on its origins, two types of the Drežniška goat developed in the past. In the Bovec area, it was bred for milk, from which the famous Bovec cheese is made. In Drežnica, the Drežniška goat was bred for meat.

The Drežniška goat almost became extinct due to the restriction of goat breeding, which lasted from the late 18th century until the breakup of Yugoslavia. Today, it is classified as an endangered breed of domestic animals.

Goats on the mountain pastures are usually grazed from early spring to winter. The shepherd has a hard time keeping the Drežniška goats in a herd, as they are very independent and lively.

The breed was officially recognized in 2000.

The colour of the Drežniška goat can be very varied. Some goats are black, others are grey-black, some are black with white spots on their heads and bodies, and some are black and grey-black with a white mark on their foreheads. There are also goats with different coat colors.

Males and some females are characterised by a strongly developed beard.

On the neck often appear so called "bells" (zvončki). This breed of goat is mostly horned. The horn of a male goat can grow up to one metre! In addition to the male, most female goats are also horned. Males can reach up to 75 cm in height and weigh up to 80 kg. Females are slightly smaller and lighter.
